What Are Nakshatras?
In Vedic astrology, the zodiac is divided not only into 12 signs but also into 27 Nakshatras — lunar mansions that track the Moon's journey through the sky over the course of a month. Each Nakshatra spans 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac and carries a distinct mythology, ruling deity, planetary lord, and set of qualities.
Nakshatras add extraordinary depth and precision to astrological readings. While your Sun sign gives a broad character sketch, your Janma Nakshatra (birth Nakshatra — the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at your birth) reveals the subtle texture of your inner life, instincts, and soul purpose.
The Structure of the Nakshatras
Each Nakshatra is further divided into four Padas (quarters), each spanning 3 degrees and 20 minutes. These padas correspond to the signs of the zodiac through the Navamsha system, adding yet another layer of nuance.
The 27 Nakshatras are grouped under the rulership of the nine Vedic planets (each planet rules three Nakshatras), which directly links to the Vimshottari Dasha system — the primary timing system of Vedic astrology.

How to Find Your Janma Nakshatra
Your Janma Nakshatra is determined by the position of the Moon at your exact birth time and location. To find yours, you'll need:
- Your date of birth
- Your time of birth (as accurate as possible)
- Your place of birth
With these details, an astrologer or Vedic astrology software can calculate your Moon's sidereal position and identify your birth Nakshatra and its pada.
Why Nakshatras Matter
Nakshatras are essential for Muhurtha (electional astrology — choosing auspicious timing for important events), compatibility matching (Kundali Milan), and understanding the precise quality of your dashas and transits. They transform a good astrological reading into a truly personalised one.
